A late season poppy field planted after government eradication groups survey areaon the road from Ishkashim to Faizabad. Poppy fields less than 50 yards from major province thru road (frequented by Police, Militry, Government, NGO). Scratch marks are “nash”, cutting with a couple of blades. From these wounds the opium seeps out. Opium is harvested multiple times from each plant, thus multiple nash marks. Some of these plants show as many as 7 marks with room for more, sign of plentiful harvest. Landowner (who also maintains fields) shares profits with another gentleman who provided seeds. This field approximately half size of football field is estimated to yield 8 kg of opium which will be sold at $60.00 kg. The profit will be split between farmer and grower and provides each with atleast 3 times more profit than if land had been used to grow food crops such as wheat. Farmer had complete awareness of illicit usage of opium crop and expressed no personal issue saying it was simple econimic and he needs to feed his kids. (nina alvarez has complete interview with farmer).
