For residents of the upper levels of the City, ion particular, the roof was an invaluable sanctuary: a 'lung' where they could breathe fresh air and escape the claustrophobia of their windowless flats below. Although the broad roofscape was angular, harsh and strewn with waste, it gave parents the opportunity to stretch out and relax, indulge a passion, or just sit back and contemplate Lion Rock to the north of the City. It was possible to traverse the City via the roofs of different buildings, either by jumping form on to the other or by following a crudely appointed thoroughfare, marked with rusting metal ladders and makeshift steps.
