fast facts on biden’s airstrike

– the airstrike targeted facilities on the Syrian side of the Syria-Iraq border, used by Hashd al-Shaabi (popular mobilization forces, PMF), an Iraqi government-sponsored paramilitary organization. PMF was involved in combatting remaining Daesh (ISIL, ISIS) forces in the area. keep in mind that throughout the Obama years, the US govt’s justification for bombing Syria was always #FightingISIS, while in practice they aided Daesh and its allies

– the US military is trying to legitimate this airstrike by claiming that it targeted “Iran-backed militants.” the PMF are Iran-backed militants in roughly the same way that the US Coast Guard are Canada-backed militants. framing this airstrike as retaliation against Iran (for alleged attacks on US military facilities in Iraq) is a transparent attempt to cloak the US military’s actual interests on the Syria-Iraq border, while further fomenting popular support for a war on Iran

– the pentagon claimed that this airstrike was conducted after consulting with the Iraqi govt; Iraq’s military has refuted this, and has denied ever providing the US with information about groups within Syrian borders

in short, the basic US claims about this airstrike are:
– it targeted Iran-backed terrorists
– it was retaliation for Iran-backed attacks on US facilities in Iraq
– it was conducted in collaboration with Iraq

and the basic facts are:
– it targeted Iraqi forces combatting Daesh
– it targeted a site over the Syrian border and some 300 miles from the US facilities in question
– it was conducted with no communication with any legitimate government in the region

i’m breaking this down not bc US military intervention would be justified if they were telling the truth, but bc some of you need to get better at seeing through pentagon lies js
